"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt

I’ve never been one to enjoy business travel much, but every so often I’ve got to do it, and last week was one of those times. The first time I flew after 9/11 I had a bit of trouble because I couldn’t understand the security guard’s accent and it just never occurred to me that he’d be asking me to take off my shoes, so I kept saying "What?" and he kept getting more agitated. I pitied the poor woman behind me who had 8 pairs of shoes in her carry on! This time it wasn’t a surprise to be asked to take them off, but I did find that there is definitely variation in the degree of sensitivity of the machinery. On my flight out I strolled right through the metal detector. On my flight back I had to remove my belt, wallet, and in the end the one dime that was lost down in my pocket. Even with that, it didn’t take more than 15 minutes from the time I joined the line until I was through. Good thing I brought a book with me since I showed up the recommended hour early!

Game Openings:

After weeks of no action here we’ve suddenly got some interest. An Industrial Waste game start, new interest in Perestroika, Gunboat, Sopwith, Snowball Fighting and RR. Just need one more to start Sopwith. Sign up now and let’s get some of these other games going! I’m especially hoping for some interest in the gunboat game, we’ve got an old hand who’d like to ease back into the hobby looking for a game.

Top

Gunboat with press: Two signed up so far.

Perestroika Diplomacy: Add an economic twist to the classic game. Centers generate revenue, armies and fleets must be maintained, and treasuries can be sacked! Rules are available on request.

Signed up: Art Schleinkofer, Phil Reynolds, Harold Reynolds, Karl Schmit

Standard Diplomacy: That’s it, the one and only original

Signed up: Fred Wiedermeyer, Hank Alme

Just the results please: Don’t really know what to call this one as I just came up with it. Perhaps it’s been tried before. The twist for this variant is that each season only the ending unit positions are published, not the orders. You’ll know who went where, but not who helped whom, or want may have been tried unsuccessfully.

Signed up: Phil Reynolds

Industrial Waste:

A new game for 3-4 players. Manager your factory and build your products, but beware, increased production means more waste, and if you aren’t careful you’ll find that working in a sludge pit affects your productivity and the bottom line.

Game Opening: Eric Brosius

Game Start: Boston Harbor

Richard Weiss, Andy York, Karl Schmit, Brad Martin

Railway Rivals: Be the first to try out Brendan Whyte’s new Queensland map.

Signed up: Brendan Whyte, Rip Gooch, Brad Martin

Outpost:

Sign up for the next game to start when the current one finishes.

Snowball fighting: Current game is over. Anyone interested in another go? Have one.

Golden Strider: It is to running what Breaking Away is to bike riding. See Tom’s szine off-the-shelf at http://www. olympus.net/personal/thowell/o-t-s/index.html for some games in progress.

Signed up: Tom Howell

Sopwith: Be a World War I Ace (or perhaps a pile of smoking rubble). It all depends on what kind of pilot you are. See Phil’s ishkibibble at www.diplom.org/DipPouch/ Postal/Zines/ishkibibble for a game in progress.

Signed up: Brendan Whyte, Robert Dowrey, Phil Reynolds, Brad Martin, Karl Schmit

Reader’s Choice: I’m open to anything, just send me the rules and if I think I can run it, I’ll offer it.

Deadlines:

Tinamou appears in every other TAP. The game deadlines are always the Monday before the appropriate TAP deadline, which is always a Saturday. Assuming that TAP remains on schedule, the next deadline will be Monday Sept 2.

For those who are new to playing Diplomacy in Tinamou, I have no special house rules. I don’t care what abbreviations you use, I’ll use my own in my report, and as long as your orders are clear and unambiguous, that’s fine with me. If in doubt, simply write out the whole province name. My normal procedure is to combine Summer retreats and Fall moves into one turn, and Winter retreats, Winter adjustments and Spring moves into another. I will separate seasons upon request of half (round down) the powers still having centers or units on the board.

Map notation notes: BOLD denotes the ending position of the unit. Moves that fail are underlined. Units that must retreat are in italics. Newly acquired centers are in bold. Lost centers are in strikethrough.

If you notice an error in the report or the map please let me know immediately so that I can send out a correction. If a mistake is not noticed before the next turn is adjudicated, then it will stand. I accept orders postally or by email. I will acknowledge all email orders. If I don’t have your orders as the deadline approaches I will usually try to track you down and get them, but you can’t count on that, I don’t always have the time.

There are no sub or game fees for Tinamou. If you want a hard copy, you must subscribe to TAP. Both TAP and Tinamou are available on the web and you are not required to have a postal subscription to play.

For not having any houserules, that took me a while, didn’t it?

2001 A Gaming ODYSSEY

Orphaned from Deny Everything

Don never does anything halfway, and his style of Gming takes a LOT of time, which he just doesn’t have at the moment. But this has been a great game and it would be a shame to let it fade away, so I will do my humble best to live up to Don’s standards. Please continue to inundate the GM with press, after all, I only have to type it in, Jim’s paying the postage!

Breaking Away: Fat Bottomed Girls

Abigail continues to lead the pack, and the pack is back! Everyone bunches up, and the card numbers go up. Three teams gain cards totaling over 40 points. Look for a bit of a sprint from the Thin Bottomed Girls as two of them have only double digit cards. With Abigail cruising in front and looking like a shoe in to win the second sprint, seems Tom’s up to his old tricks.

Kingdoms-Field: We're so worn out from last time we need to coast a bit in the mountains here.

(HOMEGROWN EVIL STAT SERVICE): These are derived from US Census Bureau data (raw numbers in millions):

BBG-whoever cares: Bo Dacious Derek is playing 4 this round, cos she's got that sort of stamina, the little hottie!

Barbarella Eden purrs, because she's got a Persian pussy behind her, and a big ail in front!

Black Pudding Bertha and Big Bad Bobette play a menage of trois, because it's unladylike to sprint to a climactic finish. Better to lay back and let it build up slowly, and enjoy the long hard wild ride. And what a ride it has been! Both girls are panting hard at this point, and looking forward to coming closer to the lead once more. Bobette passes Bertha, and Bertha passes Bobette. Will these girls ever stop making passes? Only the next round will tell...

George jumps up and down on his electric chair, and it lurches forward slightly.

George: Aha!

Jerry -> George: What are you doing next to me?

Frank -> George: Why'd you stop? You let Abigail get away!

BOOB to BABETTE: Good girl, slotted in at 40 for NO points just where you belonged. Now, everybody play those 5's you replenished and give me MUCHO points.

FRONT MEN to GM: Hey, guy, we know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. I didn't want to be shut out on the first sprint line, but I've got me a plan. We'll be at the front shortly.

Babylon-Boob: There's madness to your method, for sure.

BOOB to PELATON: And take that!!! Reform for me and give my riders the cards they deserve, I command you.

BOOB to GM: They're falling into my trap.

BOOB to HOWELL: Except for you, who always have the drop on me.

GM – BOOB: How prophetic! It does look like those thin-bottomed girls have been reading your playbook! They just out-muchoed your MUCHO.

FRENCH FOREVER: Freedom ain't all it's cracked up to be.

GM: No, but it beats the alternatives. And the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, against foes foreign AND DOMESTIC.

George -> Frank: What kind of name is Abigail? Sounds like Abigail Adams.

Kramer -> George, Jerry: Jerry! George! Where are you?

Elaine -> Kramer: We've got to finish soon. What about my poor fish? (Shows plastic bag with goldfish.) Where are those other two?

MIKE to DAVE: Thank you for the Roosevelt masthead quote in particular, and for "calling them 'freedom' now" and "trim my rose moron."

MIKE to JIM: You have a plan? Swell. I have one of David Anderson's United theories that I will trade you for it. Both algorithms have the same value: about the same as trading two points of Triple-S Blue Stamps for two points of S&H Green Stamps.

MIKE to PRESS READERS: I don't have to be very creative to come up with outlandish press about our national leaders, elected and otherwise. All I have to do is read media not controlled by the gigabuck corporation bosses who also control much of the government, highlight the ironies, contrast against the Constitution now and then, and occasionally throw in a fillip like Canadian weapon "Curling-Stone unmanned drones."

ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT to SENATOR ORRIN HATCH, Senate Judiciary Committee chairman: You said during a committee hearing June 17 that you favor developing new technology to remotely destroy the computers of people who illegally download music from the Internet. Under the USA-PATRIOT Act, destruction of a computer system is considered an act of terrorism. Your comments mean you are now supporting terrorist action. I am therefore placing you under National Security detainment without rights. You will be interned in our Guantanamo Bay facilities for the duration of the emergency.

Railway Rival Games

For those who are interested, the maps can be seen on the web. They don’t reproduce well here unfortunately as there is a lot of detail and it really needs color to differentiate the different rail lines. Towns in uppercase denote the first player to connect the town (6 point bonus).

HUBRIS: Hey, check it out, I built to Madison for MadCon! Everybody on the Gaming Train! Full MadCon spirit... good thing the monkey is driving.

HUBRIS: Fortunately this game does not have Snow event cards. Thank you, Eric! Because I'm building the GN or NP. The two railroads further west are both likely to use Arizona routes, so I need to pioneer the Northwest or maybe the Denver "Y" route (splitting northwest and southwest).

GM: Come on now, you don't really expect Conrad to be that predictable, do you?

Rolls for Round 4: 5, 5, 5

An eventful turn. We have 5 new cities created during the races, four of them generated by SPIKE. Lot's of shared track as COB drives up the east coast, only to find that ARAB had the same idea first and in fact heads north from Philadelphia, thinking perhaps to be the first to open the North East. HUBRIS starts a line to the North East himself as an afterthought after heading west and finds himself running along side SPIKE who beats them all to Providence. TURN nears the west coast but pauses to start a north-south line before bucking the last couple of mountain chains. Looks like the head start from these early races will be hard to erase, although COBs going to try and jump in. TURN keeps on with his focus on the west coast and is obviously hoping he’ll make it all up with some long distance racing.

Rolls for Round 5: 3, 4, 4

PRESS

SPIKE - Rivals: This game offers the option to seek a quick payoff and the option to invest for the future. It's nice to see that both are being pursued. Mike is doing the best job of getting a little of both.

COB: Whee. Now maybe I can enter a race.

SPIKE - HUBRIS: Here's a gamble. I could pay you substantial parallels this round, but I'm hoping you build north from Philly rather than east from Oswego. My line parallels the Erie Canal.

SPIKE - GM: No towns created during the races as a result of double "1"s so far, but it's only a matter of time! I'm having fun playing this game.

GM - SPIKE: And that time has come. In spades! Good to hear you're enjoying it!

TURN: Someone trying to out-guess us? Can't be done. I have NO strategy ... :o)

HUBRIS: Okay, I purchase the Boston & Maine RR for $4,000.

HUBRIS to GM: No, you're right; expecting Conrad to be predictable is like expecting ME to conform to conventional ways.

HUBRIS to DICE GODS: Five races and I can run none of them solo and only one feasible joint run. Sigh.

www.diplom.org/DipPouch/Postal/Zines/TAP/Tinamou/rr/perdix.htm

SPICEBLOW: I think I'm done building, so you guys will have to catch me by winning more races. I'm only entering three races this turn so you're probably getting a start on closing the margin.

Mavs beat the Kings. Spurs beat the Lakers. Who cares about the East? Well, OK, back East, Funny Cide won the Preakness by the 2nd largest margin and with the 3rd fastest time. And yes, Wallace vs. Kidd should be fun.

Iraq remains without food, potable water or electricity in many places. More citizens have died since the war then during the invasion. Hundreds of people remain in cages in Cuba without rights or visitors. And somehow Bush hangs on to a favorable rating. Is this a movie or what?

#5

President Bush has cut taxes, so far, and if the cuts are not permanent, by $1.75 trillion dollars. Unemployment has risen by 3.1 million people or 2.8% of the workforce. The economy is judged sluggish or worse in half of the Federal Reserve regions. In 1999 there was a 1.3% of GNP surplus for the government. This year there will be a 4% of GNP deficit. The nation’s debt for this year will total a record $400 billion dollars. Stimuli to the economy such as low interest rates and staging a war seem not to have worked. Reaganomics/the trickle down theory again seem to be failing the nation.

The San Antonio Spurs win the NBA championship. I watched all or part of every game. That makes me nearly unique in America as best I can figure out the ratings. I did enter a pool and did pick the Spurs to win the championship in 6 games. I came in third. Luckily the 2nd tie-breaker of points scored in the final game didn’t factor in. I guesses the total scored at 191. That was about 2 games total. This was certainly one of the least applauded finals in a long time. I found the struggle and games to be interesting despite both teams apparent ineptitude for a while.

The NBA draft happened and most of us do not even know the people selected. Two 18 year-olds go at the top. 19 people who have not played basketball in the USA. Becoming truly an international league. I await 3 teams in the NFL, NHL and NBA each being located in European cities so that there could be European swings that make some sense with time adjustments. Madrid, Munich and London maybe. MLB should go to Mexico City and Puerto Rico and probably one other Mexican city next. I think the time issues to Japan will be a major issue there.

No Weapons of Mass Destruction found yet. Civil war and guerrilla tactics in Iraq – have we decided what to do yet? Have we decided that letting everyone keep their weapons and going home was a good idea? Where are the Husseins? Is this Afghanistan deja vue?

I don’t feel safer flying as compared to having to arrive at the airport early, not be able to cut my fingernails while traveling, and having my shoes inspected with each flight. Do you think Rockport ever imagined that there leading technology for comfort shoes would require millions of dollars for research and retooling to take the metal support out of their shoes because their sales were dropping as no one wanted to wear their shoes to the airport anymore?

Three players had orders in by return mail – Saturday before I left for vacation. If we keep up with speed like that, barring more vacations, we could be done before Labor Day, certainly Halloween. I am hoping that each turn now takes a week or less.

I have two new roommates, a Mother and her 10 year old. He has introduced me to Bay Blades which is a game of spinning tops with destructive blades in them and you try to knock the other person’s top off it’s balance or flat out destroy it. The other is Yu-Gi-Oh! Magic seems to still be selling and being played. Pokemon was the totally dumbed down version of Magic. Elementary school kids loved it and, in deed, it was an excellent educational tool for them. Now there is YuGiOh. This seems to fit the niche between too simple and too complicated in the Magic series. More people will play and enjoy this game, and as kids outgrow Pokemon they are moving into this. My hope is that these new players move up into Magic eventually (not just so I can sell my cards). A nice way to get more people into gaming.

Some lines in news stories stand out more than others. Here is one that struck me today. The AP distributed a story on the Air Force Academy scandal that was printed in today’s SF Chronicle. Reporting of rape, harassment, etc. was previously confidential. Such reports will not be handled that way any more and charges will be brought through the criminal system rather than the military system. The spokesperson said that such changes were needed so that the cadets "understood that rape was a crime, not an infraction." !!!

Results of Turn 1.2; Card sets to select for Turn 2.1

Players/Company Names/CEOs/Colors:

DUMBASS Harold Reynolds

DUMBASS plays Innovation first to reduce Waste Production by 1, and costing five. Then sells an Order grossing $14M but also grossing out 4 (four)toxic barrels so he is at 5. Finally, DUMBASS auctions the Raw Materials. Chris bids $8M. David passes. Eric passes. DUMBASS thinks and thinks some more. $9M he shouts and pays the money to the bank. Harold ends the turning paying $5M in maintenance costs.

Harold started with $20, spent 5, made 14, spent 9, and paid 5. Leaving him with a net of $15M.

Chemicals ‘R US Chris Hassler

First, Chris plays Innovation to increase Raw Materials to 4/3.

Second, he auctions his Raw Materials (which is only 4 because he has already played the innovation card and reduced raw materials) – Tony bids S6M; Eric passes, Harold passes and Chris accepts Dave’s bid for $6M. Chris holds unto the Waste Disposal card and ends the turn paying $5M in maintenance costs.

Chris started with $20M, spent 5 innovating, made 6 selling raw materials, paid 8 for raw materials, and pays 5 in maintenance for a remainder of $8M.

GRREAT Dave Partridge

CEO: Tony Tiger

Plays Growth the first segment – moving to 15. The CEO sells an Order next for a cool $15M and creating 5 waste. He hangs onto the Hiring/Firing card for next round. Dave pays $5M in maintenance costs.

GRREAT: Starts with $20M, buys 4 raw materials for 6, sells an order for 15, and pays 5 in maintenance costs. Now has $24M.

DeOxyRoxy Eric Brosius

The first turn, DeOvyRoxy processes an order – making $14M and moving waste to 6. On his second turn though, Eric plays his Waste Disposal card and the Waste pile goes down to 3. During the third turn, Eric puts a juicy set of 5 Raw Materials up for auction. Harold, bids $1M. Chris jumps all the way up to $8M with his bid. David leans back to let the action go by him. Eric smiles as he takes in the $8M and Chris gets the 5 raw materials. Eric pays $5M in maintenance costs.

Eric starts with $20M, sells an order for 14, sells raw materials for 8 and pays 5 maintenance cost. He ends with $37M.

CARDS HELD: Chris Hassler – Waste Disposal, David Partridge – Hiring/Firing

Because of the Accident card coming up last turn, all cards were reshuffled.

CARDS DISCARDED DURING AUCTION

Accident – no one penalized. Cards not held will all be reshuffled again.

No other cards were discarded during the dealing of sets.

I goofed, thank you Eric. The amount of money to be provided to each player at the start of the game was supposed to be $15 million, not 20. The bank accounts have been adjusted accordingly.

CARDS HELD: Chris Hassler – Waste Disposal, David Partridge – Hiring/Firing

I am flying to Halifax, Nova Scotia early Sunday morning. I will be meandering up to the St. Lawrence Seaway, then motoring along it, a brief, very brief stop in Quebec City, then swoop down to St. Albans Vermont for a few days of partying on Lake Champlain. Both of my brothers are retiring and partying. That leaves my Father and me as the productive members of our family.

Then I go to Rochester, NY for a few days of work before returning to Sacatomatoes on Friday, July 11.
I doubt that I will check any emails before July 8 and doubt that I will reply to any before July 12. I would greatly like it if all orders were present and ready for adjudication on or before July 12.

Have a bang-up day on the 4th.

Results of Turn 2.2; Card sets to select for Turn 3.1

DUMBASS Harold Reynolds

Dumbass plays Growth – moving to 15. Then, being no dumbass, he sells his Order using 5 raw materials, making $15 million and only 4 of waste. Then comes Waste Disposal to reduce his total waste from 9 back to 6.

Chemicals ‘R US Chris Hassler

Chemicals R US Grows to 15, then sells their Order of 4 raw materials for $15M and producing 5 of waste up to 6. Then Waste Disposal and the waste on site is reduced to 3. Hold the Innovation.

GRREAT Dave Partridge

CEO: Tony Tiger. Tony grrrowls that he wants to play Innovation and the Adviser for a cost of $10M. Grreat innovates by reducing his Raw Materials needed to ship an order by one and also improves his rationalization by one. Tony then fires a hundred workers to reduce his end of turn costs by one. Not wanting to stop, Tony then plays his Waste Disposal, putting him solidly into the green. The Grrreat turn is over.

DeOxyRoxy Eric Brosius

First, DeOxyRoxy tries to get the crowds adrenalin rushing by auctioning off one juicy load of 5 Raw Materials. Harold and Chris pass. Tony the Tiger bids $5M. DeOxyRoxy rocks the auction by bidding $6M and taking the goodies of 5 raw materials and pays the bank.

After not getting any adrenalin going with the auction, DeOxy decides to increase adrenalin via the olfactory route and special delivers one glob of lovely Waste over to his opponents by playing Waste Removal. Each of their wastes go up one, DeOxy Rocks his pile down one. The Order card is held for next turn.
