The idea came to Larry after he read a USA Today story on what the top ten
Google travel searches were this year. He invited Kevin and Mario to list
3 or 4 of what we think the Top Ten TDP Dip searches were this year.
Here we go:
- (LP) Which are better; wooden or plastic Diplomacy pieces?
Tell me
Plastic, obviously. After a third of a century how could David
Hood be wrong?
- (LP) Where the hell is the Halditcohkka peak anyway?
Beats me
The Halditcohkka peak of the Halti mountain, at only 4,366 feet, is
outside of Norway's top 200 highest points, but it could become the highest
point in Finland and the furthest western piece of Finland on the Diplomacy
board.
- (LP) How many Diplomacy events did Toby Harris say he was going to this year
and then not attend?
He told me
My calculator only has spaces for nine digits.
- (LP) What did Larry Peery promise to do in the Dip hobby this year and not do?
I'm not a mind reader
Send Conrad Woodring a copy of Allan B. Calhamer's National
Pastime and Nate Cockerill has wooden Austrian Army piece. No excuse
unless dementia, Alzheimer's or sheer Peery laziness count.
- (KB) Where did Niccolo Macchiavelli live and work?
I know that
If you thought "Milan", you have been blinded by Norm deGuerre. It's
Firenze or Florence.
- (KB) What is the correct spelling of a color between white and
black; having a neutral hue?
Pardon me?
Both "grey" (British) and "gray" (American) are accepted. "Gray" as figurative
for "Southern troops in the U.S. Civil War" is first
recorded 1863,
in reference to their uniform color.
- (KB) Where precisely is Galicia?
On the map, obviously
A) In the northwest of Spain, above Portugal. Famous among pilgrims
making the journey to Compostela.
B) In Eastern Europe, split between Poland, Hungary, the Ukraine and Slovakia.
Famous among Diplomacy players for the friction it generates between Austria
and Russia.
- (MH) What part of Slovenia is missing on the map with the same name?
I'll take a look
The coast, also called Slovenian Istria.
- (MH) What are Austria's two most vital spaces according to Toby, the
reigning World Champion?
The Großglockner? A café in Vienna?
Albania and Aegean Sea.
- (MH) What car was archduke Franz Ferdinand standing in when he was
assassinated on June 28, 1914?
Trivial
Bonus:
- (MH) If Mario's father had followed the same logic as Manus' father had,
what would have been his name?
Now there's a good question
Domus Huys. Manus is Latin for Hand, Huys is an old Dutch spelling for
House, which translates to Domus in Latin. By sheer coincidence, both Latin
words belong to the rare fourth declension and actually have a female
gender! (Hush, the secret is out, the beard Manus is sprouting is a fake.)
As a token of respect, I will hereafter change my initials to DH, as in
Diplomatic House (but really standing for Domus Huys). Welcome to my house.
