THE ABYSSINIAN PRINCE #373

July 6, 2016

Jim Burgess, 664 Smith Street, Providence, RI 02908-4327 USA, (401)351-0287, jfburgess of gmail.com

E-MAIL/WEB ONLY ISSUE! PDF will be available on the website. We also are being reproduced in Eternal Sunshine.

Web Page Address: /Postal/Zines/TAP/index.html

The Kendo Nagasaki game ends! Rick Desper wins!! We will start another game next time.
This issue continues the szine/subszine inversion. As most of you know, this thing began as a "subszine" to Terry Tallman's North Sealth, West George in NSWG #16, then became its own szine with a host of subszines. Since Terry's passing, we lose our thirty year fervent hope that someday NSWG would have been resurrected and I could go back and swear my fealty to the Toadfather. The subszines remaining will appear as sub-subszines to our flipflopped home in Doug Kent's Eternal Sunshine. I'm set on continuing my GMing, and I'm starting to write a bit, hope there might be more. Feel free to communicate with me about how you want to help or what you want to play, or if anyone else wants TAP subszine status.
For production, in addition to the HTML's of each separate product on the web page, I also have a PDF that you can print of the entire subszine (including my famous handdrawn maps!). You can just print the maps if you like, but remember maps are for pikers anyway, you don't need no steenkin' maps, keep them up in your head where they belong. I'm having trouble with the upload interfaces, part of the diplom.org site move consequences. I'll get it fixed as soon as I can. I need to stay within the security of the site (which is very important!!!!) while getting access to change the web site's index and files for the szine. It shouldn't be that hard, but my first attempt didn't work.
The Diplom.org site has moved yet again. Chris Babcock and Mario Huys are still in charge. There were a few glitches and broken links, but things should be fixed now, if you have problems, let us know! But if you find you cannot access the website with the PDFs and HTMLs of all the past issues... well, please let me know and we'll fix it. The address is still: /. I had a glitch in the webpage update process, but that should be fixed for this issue.
There are currently 75 members of the official TAP subscriber list, but that's down because in the move, there were some addresses dropped. http://lists.asciiking.com/mailman/listinfo/tap is the current list website. YOU need to make sure you're on this list. I'm trying to add some of the newer subscribers who aren't there. If you have questions or problems, PLEASE ask. There you can check your subscribing options and whether you're registered. Register if you want to get TAP E-Mailed regularly. Some people have had trouble with the attachments, so I have switched to sending the link in the announcements, I see that does help. Please let me know about other issues, but it puts priority on getting link up again. Apologies for last issue's confusions.

THE ABYSSINIAN PRINCE FEATURES SECTION (CONS/LETTERS/MUSIC)
((For upcoming cons around the world: /Face/cons/index.php, success, we have badgered all the Con directors to post their Cons, so it is reasonably up to date now. And there remains lots of interest in the FTF community, and linking E-Mail/Web players to FTF. Also, the Facebook page for European Tournament Diplomacy, https://www.facebook.com/groups/1500292310187264/, Diplomacy in Europe, has been really active and the place to be in the hobby these days. If you're on Facebook, hook up there! World DipCon in Chicago, June 24-26, was incredible. See the latest issue of Diplomacy World for results: http://www.diplomacyworld.net/pdf/dw134.pdf))

TOTALCON 2016 Report
(First Round of Four Tournament Nor'Easter)
Thanks to everyone and to the great TotalCon hosts, I reserved two crash rooms and four people stayed in them. I continue to think having crash rooms is a really important part of helping travelers who come from a distance to the con. The shift to TotalCon was pretty seamless and it definitely was a plus to the Boston people and Northern New Englanders to be a little bit closer. On the other hand... Connecticut and NYC travelers had to come a bit longer. Still, it was a great tournament, sorry for the delay in getting these results all entered. As I was entering the results, look at all the back and forth you can see in the center counts, many people went down to a couple of centers then came back to top a board, others were topping a board for a while and then were eliminated. Lots of great Diplomacy reflected here!!! Note the key game in Round 3, Game 1, where Emily Pollock and Brad Blitstein traded a center at the end. This determined the outcome of the Tournament. We definitely are going back to TotalCon next year, it's actually getting close to making that happen. For the New England area group, next up on the agenda is a revived Boston Massacre event. It is coming up September 24-25 at the Marriott in Cambridge across the river from Boston.

Game Notes:
1) The rules are on the TAP website in the Tinamou section. Ask if you have any questions. Rules at:
/Postal/Zines/TAP/Tinamou/rules/BreakingAway.htm
Up above in parentheses is the card you played to get to where you are in the field. The replenishment card is the last card in your list. Be careful to note that the card you played (the one in parentheses) is not available for you, for next turn. Just for fun, I keep track of total replenishment, by turn, which is a rough measure of how the teams are doing. Of course, it is lining up to get across the sprint and final lines in the right places that really counts. We can calculate an "efficiency score" later, which will be the ratio of scoring points per replenishment.
2) Two riders have been dropped from the pack, but I keep them moving along with their "3" for the rest of the game. On the other end, Rick and Brendan are neck and neck for Total Replenishments, but Rick leads by far in turning them into points. The second Sprint Line comes up after 80.

King Henry VIII of England in Heidelberg, Germany Henry II in Stochholm, Sweden

Rick Desper: Andy York:
No Guess Received Johannes Agricola in Hannover, Germany

HINT to the Person with the Closest Geographic Guess: We agreed on a great many things, but you were much more of a rabble-rouser to the lesser educated classes, while I was more of an intellectual humanist.

TURN 6
Brendan Whyte: Tom Howell:
No Guess Received Johannes Agricola in Leipzig, Germany

Hank Alme: Marc Ellinger:
Karl von Miltitz in Hanover, Germany Erasmus in Chemnitz, Germany

Peter Sullivan: Doug Kent:
John Calvin in Leipzig, Germany Philip I of Hesse in Essen, Germany

Rick Desper: Andy York:
Philipp Melanchthon in Leipzig, Germany Philipp Melanchthon in Paderborn, Germany

HINT to the Person with the Closest Geographic Guess: You are quite a bit farther away than some of the previous guesses, and someone else has identified me, but not you.

TURN 7
Brendan Whyte: Tom Howell:
Erasmus in Osnabruck, Germany Johannes Agricola in Bad Konigshofen, Germany

Hank Alme: Marc Ellinger:
Karl von Miltitz in Rabenau, Germany John Calvin in Dessau-Roßlau, Germany

Peter Sullivan: Doug Kent:
John Calvin in Bad Schmiedeberg, Germany Erasmus in Stuttgart, Germany

Rick Desper: Andy York:
Philipp Melanchthon in Magdeburg, Germany Karl von Miltitz in Rostock, Germany

HINT to the Person with the Closest Geographic Guess: The person who is closest has now identified me as well, and all the Bad guesses are just bad...

TURN 8
Brendan Whyte: Tom Howell:
John Calvin in Ravensberg, Germany Karl von Miltitz in Bremen, Germany

Hank Alme: Marc Ellinger:
Karl von Miltitz in Hamburg, Germany Karl Von Miltitz in Meißen, Germany

Peter Sullivan: Doug Kent:
John Calvin in Kothen, Germany Erasmus in Ulm, Germany

Rick Desper: Andy York:
John Calvin in Potsdam, Germany John Calvin in Zerbst, Germany

HINT to the Person with the Closest Geographic Guess: I think it is time to say two things, only two of you avoided getting further away from me again this time, and while Germany is a wonderful country, it is NOT the country I'm in.

TURN 9
Brendan Whyte: Tom Howell:
Erasmus in Geneva, Switzerland Erasmus in Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Hank Alme: Marc Ellinger:
Karl von Miltitz in Copenhagen, Denmark Karl Von Miltitz in Szczecin, Poland

Peter Sullivan: Doug Kent:
John Calvin in Prague, Czech Republic Erasmus in Strasbourg, France

Rick Desper: Andy York:
Erasmus in Basel, Switzerland John Calvin in Szczecin, Poland

HINT to the Person with the Closest Geographic Guess: Rick Desper wins as he has nailed my identity AND location! I thought we might need one more turn. The closest guesses in each turn are in BOLD above.

LAST WORD: First, a couple of closing comments on this Kendo Nagasaki. I've always liked having some cool connection between the place and the person. Erasmus, technically Desiderius Erasmus, who usually was known as Erasmus of Rotterdam was a really fascinating guy, one of my favorite thinkers of the Renaissance era. He died in Basel in 1536, which is why I chose Basel as his location rather than Rotterdam. All of you spent lots of time stuck in Germany with your guesses and then Tom Howell went to Rotterdam while Rick and Brendan correctly figured out it had to be south of Germany from the guesses. It was interesting though, I think everyone went almost every which way this last turn other than Luxembourg and Austria. Rick got it despite NOT being closest in the German sweepstakes. Anyway, this time for the next game, I have disconnected the person from the location, at least they have no connection I know of. Please join and keep going, I really like how people generally can get these in just ten turns, it is a FASCINATING game!!!
So, a bit on why so late this time... I went to three conferences in June, each one bigger than the last, the one that was up against World DipCon had almost 3000 people and I was heading just too many committees there to run out to WDC, though certainly a big part of me would have preferred to be there. WDC also spurred me to get all the results of the TotalCon I ran in February entered. This was a REALLY crazy spring with both illness and work, otherwise I have no excuse. But in this issue, I really do "catch up". The Northeastern hobby goes on to Philadelphia Massacre and then the renamed Boston Massacre in short order. I won't make Philly, but will make Boston (Cambridge) on Sept. 24-25. It isn't too late to sign up and go to the Philadelphia Massacre Aug. 5-7, see details at: https://philadelphiamassacre.com. Then, we will finish out the four tournament Nor'Easter with Carnage in Vermont at Killington, November 4-6 (I haven't heard too many details about that one yet, but I'm sure they will be forthcoming). Diplomacy World also had to come out, and we finally have the next Demo Game lineup together and I wrote a remembrance of our old pal Pitt Crandlemire, who passed away recently. Pitt did the best job of organizing us unorganizable Boston area Diplomacy players for the time he did it over the 30 years that I've been part of that scene and I missed him already, now I miss him more. You will find the latest DW at: http://www.diplomacyworld.net/pdf/dw134.pdf.
On my illness front, if I'm REALLY lucky now, I've had my last chemotherapy treatment, some more tests next week and if they come up well, I'll go into follow up therapy, probably including some immunotherapy. The chemo really has been wearing on me, and I've been getting to the point of really wanting to be done, instead of just wanting to be done. We who have been through this know what I mean by that. I still count myself as very lucky, as all the chemo I've done has been really effective, and I've not had to have any surgery so far. Others of our compatriots have not been so lucky. Mark Fassio continues to slowly get worse and I'm not sure how much longer he'll still be with us. Drop him an E-Mail at faz of twc.com, though don't expect quick responses, I'm sure he'll appreciate whatever notes he gets. Right this instant I'm doing a week of vacation through and following the Fourth of July at my place in Maine. The weather has been beautiful, and that also has hampered me getting the last bit of this done. I declare myself close enough to the end of the page, sorry again for the delay, short game deadlines, but mostly just for Summer retreats, and I definitely will get a quicker and slimmer issue out later this month.
