THE ABYSSINIAN PRINCE #335

July 30, 2012

Jim Burgess, 664 Smith Street, Providence, RI 02908-4327 USA, (401)351-0287, jfburgess of gmail.com

E-MAIL/WEB ONLY ISSUE! PDF will be available on the website. Join the tidal wave of Dippers going to World DipCon in Chicago in August, we still can overwhelm Shark Chum with 330 warm bodies!

Web Page Address: /Postal/Zines/TAP/index.html

Some of you are still not on the E-Mail list for this szine, I keep trying to sign you up, please accept the offer! I am being a bit more systematic about that right now. I am going ahead and finishing all the games here, and then we'll see what happens.
This issue continues the szine/subszine inversion. As most of you know, this thing began as a ßubszine" to Terry Tallman's North Sealth, West George, then became its own szine with a host of subszines. The subszines remaining will appear as sub-subszines to our new flipflopped home in Doug Kent's Eternal Sunshine. Doug will keep us on schedule so we will charge forward and finish the remaining games that I have in here. After that, we'll see how it goes and what I do next. I'd like to keep writing and doing some game GMing. You all should see first what I actually do.
For production, in addition to the HTML's of each separate product on the web page, I will also have a PDF that you can print of the entire subszine (including my famous handdrawn maps!). You can just print the maps if you like, but remember maps are for pikers anyway, you don't need no steenkin' maps, keep them up in your head where they belong. I don't think there are very many people I owe money, but if you think I owe you money, just ask and I will pay. ONE GROUP that is definitely owed money is the players with NMR insurance. NMR insurance still continues, I will still call you for it, and when your game ends, I will refund the money.
General information about the mailing list is at: /mailman/listinfo/tap You can sign up from there, or send E-Mails to: Tap-request of diplom.org; with the word `help' in the subject or body (don't include the quotes), and you will get back a message with instructions. You must know your password to change your options (including changing the password, itself) or to unsubscribe.

THE ABYSSINIAN PRINCE LETTERS SECTION
((Let's keep talking about FTF tournament diplomacy! World DipCon is fast approaching in August, I'm putting on a real hard full-court press on getting every single one of you reading this to come. Why not? E-Mail me with your excuse and I'll shred it. The convention is in beautiful downtown Chicago and has five rounds beginning first thing Friday morning, August 10th and ending on August 12th. Find more information at: http://windycityweasels.org/wdc or contact Jim O'Kelley (aka Shark Chum) and come meet me and maybe you'll see my "Alice" T-Shirt coming out of the closet... let's especially get some of the old crowd to come join us, this is your last chance. See Jim's note below for some of the latest updates.))
((For these and other upcoming cons around the world: /Face/cons/index.php))

* ABC, Easy as 1, 2, 3
Turns out getting Allan B. Calhamer, the creator of Diplomacy, to attend the World Diplomacy Championship at Weasel Moot VI was as easy as:
1) Dropping by his home in LaGrange Park on official business for Edi Birsan and another hobby luminary who wishes to remain anonymous for now.
2) Leaving a letter in his mailbox when no one answered the doorbell.
3) And exchanging emails with his youngest daughter, Selenne.
Mr. Calhamer, his wife and perhaps Selenne will be joining us for a few hours during the third round on Saturday, Aug. 11. Don't miss the opportunity to meet the man who started it all!
http://windycityweasels.org/news/461-abc-easy-as-123
((I last met Allan Calhamer at the World DipCon in Baltimore, which I think was his last public hobby appearance. Some of us have been working on this for awhile. You REALLY cannot pass up this opportunity!))

* Help us welcome the out-of-towners at the Exchequer
Join us Thursday evening at Exchequer Restaurant and Pub, 226 S Wabash in Chicago, as we welcome our out-of-town guests to the 22nd annual World Diplomacy Championship at Weasel Moot VI. The event will be held in a private room at the Exchequer from 8 to 10 p.m. and will feature a buffet, unlimited drinks, and a trivia contest hosted by Dan Burgess. Get the details at the website.
http://windycityweasels.org/news/462-wdc-welcome-party-at-the-exchequer
((Dan, who is no relation, has been running these sorts of events as a business lately, he's great at it. I will be there for this too, and you should be too. Cheap Southwest Airlines flights, with special last minute fares, into Midway Airport will shock you. You CAN do this!!!))

* Important Dates
- Aug. 9: WDC Welcome Party at the Exchequer, 226 S Wabash in Chicago.
- Aug. 10-12: World Diplomacy Championship at Weasel Moot VI, the Florentine Room on the third floor of the Congress Plaza Hotel, 520 S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago.

((Here's a list of some of the advance announced people who are coming in addition to ME, Steve Cooley, Rick Desper, Melinda Holley, Don Williams, Edi Birsan, Don Scheifler, Don Del Grande, and Andy Lischett. I've met Don W., Rick, Steve, and Edi many times; and Don Del Grande has been a regular attendee at many World DipCons I've been to, but I'm really looking forward to meeting Don Scheifler, Andy Lischett and Melinda Holley. You can too!!!))

Warren Goesle (Monday, July 16, 2012 12:56 PM)
So what kind of reception will the White Sox 3rd baseman get tonight at Fenway?
Goz, Warren.Goesle of Navistar.com
((Youk, Youk, Youk, of course....))

Rick Desper (Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:07 PM)
Youk is far more popular than Bobby V., who doesn't seem to understand that complaining about players to the media is disliked by the fanbase.
Rick, rick_desper of yahoo.com
((And we care about the fanbase why???))

Warren Goesle (Tuesday, July 17, 2012 2:11 PM)
From what I watched, last night's 3-for-4 seemed to be something of a 'take that'. What's the over/under on Bobby V's departure date?
Goz, Warren.Goesle of Navistar.com

Rick Desper (Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:52 PM)
The problem is that Bobby V. is Lucchino's choice. So he'll be around stinking up the fridge long past his expiration date.
Rick, rick_desper of yahoo.com
((I've heard it said that WHEN he finally goes, it will not be quiet, but one of the biggest firestorms we've ever seen. I think that's right. As I say, I still like him... more than I thought I would, another win tonight to go back over .500. Two more games against Detroit to pick up ground in the Wild Card race. Then tomorrow is the trade deadline and we see what the Sox can do.))

Warren Goesle (Tuesday, July 17, 2012 3:03 PM)
So no hope to bring back Grady Little?
Goz, Warren.Goesle of Navistar.com

Rick Desper (Tuesday, July 17, 2012 2:21 PM)
It's an interesting question as to who is a better manager, Little or Valentine. Little just seems like a bit of a dummy, while Valentine is a jerk. For all his faults, Francona is far and away the best manager I've seen in Boston. But they've really had a lot of stinkers. Don't get me started on Zimmer. I'm with Bill Lee: he's a giant gerbil.
Rick, rick_desper of yahoo.com

Warren Goesle (Tue, 17 Jul 2012 14:26:13 -0500)
I think Jim-Bob said that Frank Chance was the best Red Sox Manager heād ever seen.
Goz, Warren.Goesle of Navistar.com
((Hey guys, last I knew, since Grady Little was let go by the Dodgers, he's available. I don't think he's working now!! More seriously, I may be the only one, but I'm enjoying the Bobby Valentine era and I actually think they will put it together this year and be better for the path they've taken to get there. So, I am not on this train.))

Warren Goesle (Tue, 17 Jul 2012 19:29:21 -0400 (EDT))
If memory serves, I ordered Saltalamacchia last time I was at a Bohemian restaurant. You can always count on Jim-Bob to bring us back to earth. Jim-Bob, had you been a Cubs' fan, they wouldn't win the World Series until 2908...and you'd still be drinking the Cubbie-blue Kool-Aid every year.
Goz, Warren.Goesle of Navistar.com
((That's exactly right, Mr. Glass 3/4 full, that's me...))

Warren Goesle (Monday, July 30, 2012 7:57 AM)
OK, topic shift without a clutch. I'm trying to gauge my personal Sports Fan Index (SPI), which is a term I just made up and have no good definition for.
Here's the question, and I address it to each of you as Red Sox fans: how many of you would purposely tune in to a televised game involving the Red Sox AAA or AA affiliate instead of another sporting event at the same time along the lines of a regular season Celtics or Bruins game, or maybe random Olympic cove rage?
Thanks, Goz, Warren.Goesle of Navistar.com

Dave Partridge (Monday, July 30, 2012 10:54 AM)
Answer.  Never. The only sport that I really watch on TV is football, and I'm kind of spotty on that due to the timing. Won't spend a nice weekend day indoors.  In fact I think I can honestly say that I've watched tv less than 5 times since the superbowl.  Sorry to skew your survey (<:

Rick Desper (Mon, 30 Jul 2012 09:54:09 -0700 (PDT))
I would possibly go to a minor league game in person (I've done so in the past) but I wouldn't watch one on TV.
Rick, rick_desper of yahoo.com
((I very, very, very occasionally watch sports on TV, and never a whole Red Sox game. Remember that I'm mostly a radio listener. I have been to more Pawtucket Red Sox games than Boston Red Sox games, by a VERY considerable number [of course, I live in Rhode Island]. And I do quite often listen to the radio broadcasts of the AAA (Pawsox) and AA (Sea Dogs) farm teams.))
THE ABYSSINIAN PRINCE GAMES SECTION
I am continuing to note cut or failed support orders with a small "s" instead of a capital "S". This will make it easier on the E-Mailed version of the szine to see what happened, since the italics don't show there. The italics DO show on the web page just fine. Since I'm not postal mailing the szine any more, I've dropped back to just reporting the disguised E-Mail addresses. As someone notes, if you need some more contact information, go back to past issues or ask me.
Standby lists:
Mike Barno, Dick Martin, Brad Wilson, Jack McHugh, Glenn Petroski, Steve Emmert, Mark Kinney, Vince Lutterbie, Eric Brosius, Paul Rauterberg, Bob Osuch, Doug Kent, Sean O'Donnell, Heath Gardner, Paul Kenny, and Jeff O'Donnell stand by for regular Diplomacy. Let me know if you want on or off these lists, especially OFF given the new policies.

GAME OPENING INFORMATION
I'm going to start the game opening list over. Under the new regime, who wants to play?
DIPLOMACY: First off, another regular Diplomacy game is open. Doug Kent and Brad Wilson are in, anyone else?
BREAKING AWAY: Also, a new Breaking Away game is open. Currently Andy York is on board. This is the game I really like running and want to start another one. It's easy, very low maintenance.
