If you see a mark here _____
your subscription expires with this issue.
See below for new rates.
Produced by Jim Burgess, 664 Smith Street, Providence, RI 02908-4327 USA,
(401)351-0287 NOTE: While we will be moving in
the next few months, continue to use this address until I supply you with a new
one. All mail will be forwarded! Accessible through Internet at burgess of
world.std.com (all E-Mail addresses are reported in this format, replace the
" of " with "@"; if you bounce try sending to me from
another account. Some of you have been getting bounced messages from my ISP's
spam protection, if that happens to you, USE my backup E-Mail at jfburgess of
gmail.com!!! Don't complain that my E-Mail keeps bouncing without forwarding
the bounced message to that address. Then I can forward it to the ISP help to
get it dealt with.
WARNING: My email has been
giving me quite a bit of trouble in the last six weeks. So if you send me an email, I would prefer
you send it to BOTH email addresses, and just to be on the safe side, send it
three times to each. When this issue
resolves itself I will let you know. The
first (and sometime second) copy of every email I receive seems to vanish.
Web Page Address:
/Postal/Zines/TAP/index.html
I expect ALL players to be signed up on the E-Mail notification list for the
szine, see below. Some of you have been complaining about this, but it is up to
you to get on this list, it's easy, come ask me if you have trouble. THIS IS A
PROBLEM, sign up now if you're playing!!!
The postal sub price is now
$5.00 per issue in the US and Canada, with triple that for other foreign
subbers (or $15.00 per issue sent airmail). Players in current games and
standbys will no longer get the issues for free, and future game starts (except
for Nuclear Yuppie Evil Empire Diplomacy, which is free) cost $75.00 ($70.00
for a life of the game subscription and $5 for the NMR Insurance. Anyone may
play in subszines for free and just jack up the issue page count. Since I have
to get caught up this issue with all sorts of subszines, I'm going to be fairly
limited with other items this issue. See the revised game start announcements
below!
As most of you know, I am
an economist. So I simply can no longer
accept publishing this publication at a loss per published publication. Every issue that I issue causes me to issue
more funds from my issue account, and this has become a major issue. So I am raising the rates (see above). I’ve adjusted all sub balances to apply to
the new rates. If you see a mark at the
top of this page, your subscription has expired, and you need to fund it with
more funds. If you want to have fun you
can’t fudge it, you need to supply me with funds, fungible funds.
I’m trying to get this
thing back on track, so please check out the Game Openings section for lots of
new openings in games, which are open. I
mean the games are open and they have openings.
For you. Just open this to the
Game Openings section and you’ll see the new openings that are now open. And I’m open to adding more openings if you
are open to it.
Peter Sullivan's subszine
is dead and buried. Just as well, as I
am sick of stupid choo choo games. I
haven’t heard from David Partridge lately, but I expect him to return. Andy York and Doug Kent had been my most
frequent subszine guests lately, but don’t plan on seeing Doug anytime
soon. I have the last two issues of his
subzone in hand, but his wife Heather asked that I not publish them. It seems that the Bureau of Prisons and the
Department of Justice were rather unhappy with some of the things he said, and
he is now back in lock-up. Heather hopes
he’ll be home my Memorial Day 2009. I
know we all send her our best wishes.
Andy York is still here, and I am very proud to announce that stepping
in to fill the void is Jack McHugh, who will be submitting a subzine every
issue or two. To save $$, I am not including Andy or Jack’s
subzones in this mailing. You can find
them online.
I do feel I need to
apologize for the extreme lateness of this issue. I could blame it on work, or home life, or a
number of other things. But the truth of
the matter is, the thing which really delayed me (besides the cost, which I
discuss above) was this stupid new X-Files Movie. You see, as many of you now, I am a HUGE
X-Files fan. HUGE. I mean, I’d sleep in Mulder and Scully bed
sheets if I could. And every Halloween I
dress up as The Smoking Man or one of the Lone Gunmen. So I heard this new film was coming out…but
it had been SO LONG since I’d seen any of the original episodes, I decided I’d
need to watch them or else I might not understand what was happening. So most of my free time was taken up watching
ever single episode through the first nine seasons. I even watched the ones Mulder wasn’t
in. You know, the ones with the guy from
The Terminator? Only he isn’t a
Terminator here, he’s a human. An FBI
agent, who happens to be human. Not a
robot. Well, I suppose he could be a
robot or an android but they never get into that. But as far as we’re supposed to think, he’s a
human FBI agent.
It was a close call. I almost had to take some time off of work to
finish, but I managed to do it. Then I
went and saw the movie, which was AMAZING.
It was the best film I’ve seen all year, besides Mad Money which is now
in my top five of all time. If you
missed Mad Money, go buy it on DVD.
Don’t rent it, BUY it, because you’ll want to watch it over and over
again.
The thing that really
pissed me off, pardon my French, is that after I saw the new X-Files movie I
was walking in Wal-Mart to buy some cat food and bread to make sandwiches, and
they had a stupid DVD which was supposed to give you all the information you
needed to watch the movie. I could have
saved ALL THAT TIME! Oh well, then I wouldn’t
have enjoyed the episode where the freak pig-boy gets to go to the Cher concert
at the end. I mean, we don’t see that it
is Cher, but they tell us it is, and it sounds like her. It might have been a stand-in. That’s my favorite episode. This kid idolizes Cher because she was nice
to that Mask kid in Mask. Not the Jim
Carrey movie. The other one. The one where the kid looks like he is
wearing a mask. But he isn’t, it’s his
real face. I mean, yes, it IS a mask,
but that’s only because the actor who is PORTRAYING the kid – Rocky Dennis was
his name – had to wear a mask to look like the kid. And I don’t mean Rocky Dennis is the actor’s
name; that was the characters name. The
actor was that guy who was in Some Kind of Wonderful. I forget his name. And Pulp Fiction. But not Bruce Willis or John Travolta. The one who was stuck the needle into the
girl’s heart to help her when she was O-Ding on heroin. You know which girl I mean? The one from The Truth About Cats and Dogs. But not Janeane Garafolo. The other one. Uma.
Yeah. Her.
So that’s why this issue is
so late.
In other personal news,
we’ve got a busy household, as we are selling this house. Yes, I simply could not take this long, cold
New England winters anymore. So we are
moving south to New Shoreham, Rhode Island.
It should be a lot warmer there.
We have bids in for two houses, so as soon as I know which one we are
moving to I’ll give you the new address.
THE
SEARCH FOR CONRAD VON METZKE |
Michel
Feron gets added to the list of failures, next up the former editor of Costaguana.
I’m told he may be somewhere on the west coast these days, but my own attempts
to locate him have been met with no responses.
So take a look yourself, and win the $500 prize! You have until issue #320.
I am
running out of people on MY list of who to search for, so I am looking for
ideas, who would you like to find? Send me some names. I may go into Jim
Meinel's Encyclopedia of North American Diplomacy szines and find some more
szine editors to search for, that's what I usually do, but I'd like to find
people that some of you will search for or want to find!!! Come on, help me
out.
Feel free to spend the time looking for some of the backlog. Let's get Jerry,
Margaret, Derek, Sylvain, Steve, Ed, Tom, Gregory, Michel, and ESPECIALLY Kevin
found too!!! This is a regular continuing feature of the szine and I will be
introducing a new "search for" every five issues. Moreover, you can
win a $250 prize for finding some previous target who went unfound in the original
$500 period. That means that if Jerry Jones or Margaret Gemignani or Steve
Heinowski or Ed Henry or Tom Hurst or Gregory Stewart or Derek Nelson or
Sylvain LaRose or John Smythe or Michel Feron is "found" from now on
it is worth $250.
Winners will receive credit for Dip hobby activities that I will pay out as
requested by the winner. Subscribe to szines here or abroad, run your own
contests, publish a szine, finance a web page, GO TO A DIPLOMACY CONVENTION or
whatever. Spend it all right away or use me as a bank to cover hobby activities
for years. What must you do to win? Get me a letter to the editor for TAP
from the person we're searching for.
This is
very important, just finding them doesn't do it. They have to write me a
letter. The final judge as to the winner of any contest will be the target
himself and I reserve the right to investigate the winning entry. When you find
someone I'm looking for, you should ask him to send me a letter for print that
includes a verification of who "found" him.
DIPDOM
NEWS SECTION (with letters) |
Obscure
and not-so-obscure ramblings on the state of the hobby and its publications,
custodians, events, and individuals with no guarantee of relevance from the
fertile keyboard of Jim-Bob, the E-Mail Dip world, and the rest of the postal
hobby. My comments are in italics and ((double quotation marks))
like this. Bold face is used to set off each individual speaker. I
should also make a note that I do edit for syntax and spelling on occasion.
The game

Awards Committee is Jim Burgess (Chair and Treasurer), Fred Davis, Jr., Melinda
Holley, Gary Behnen, Sigmund the Sea Monster, Jamie Dreier, Paul Kenny, Mark
Stretch, David Webster, Nathan Barnes, Red Fraggle, Bobby Brady, and Robert
Lesco. I was going to publish the award ballot for this year in this issue, but
I realized that I really just had to get this out first and then do that....
and then, well, REAL SOON NOW!!! And when I do, I'm going to give out three
sets of awards and get caught up for the missed years, that seems to make the
most sense. Committee.... you will be hearing from me soon! This also fell
apart with my move, but I think I can get it together for next issue.
Diplomacy World Issue Deadline is now:
Deadline Fall
2008, Issue #103: beginning of October
See
http://www.diplomacyworld.net/ for some exciting back issue material being
posted as well as the new Issues, including the monstrous Issue #100.
Highlights of #100 include Walt Buchanan's ex-wife Carol showing us who REALLY
was in charge of the hobby back in the Hoosier Archives days, Eric Ozog

Cathy, and the start of the new Diplomacy World Demo Game. In addition to the
first two issues, we have every issue back to issue number 53 posted.
Eventually they all will be up.

If I wasn’t soooooooooooooooooooooooo far behind I would give you all the
details of my trip to Bangor, Maine for DipCon this year. But that story will have to wait until next
issue. Suffice to say I had a wonderful
time, and despite the whiners and complainers and sore losers, the event was a
weekend to remember. Some people, like
Edi Birsan for instance, take this hobby way too seriously. We can’t win all the time, and only an
immature, stubborn, poor sport, sore loser, titbag baby baby stick your head in
gravy wash it out with bubbglegum and send it to the navy would complain about
losing. I mean, there can only be one
winner. And Edi, guess what? It wasn’t you. Do you know why? Well, because you lost…so if you’re not a
winner, you must be a LOSER! Loser! Loser!
Whatcha gonna do? Cry? Come on baby boy, cry. One, two, three, cry. I am the Great Santini!
MUSIC
AND MOVIES SECTION (WITH COMMENTS ON OTHER ARTS AND SOCIETY) |
We were
running a "123 tunes" contest here (stolen blatantly from Mark
Wightman and the late lamented The Sprouts of Wrath. If anyone would
like to send me a tape or CD of their 123 songs (which was the original point)
that would be great, but I don't intend to require that. I will be playing in
the sense that I'll be putting 123 tunes in, and you have to guess me, but I
obviously won't score points. Send commentary with your choices, and we'll see
if people can guess who you are!!! And already there is a LOT of diversity in
defining tunes and styles, so BE CREATIVE!!! This kind of died, mostly because
of me. I don't want to take this last issue getting it back together, but might
next issue. Feel free to send along general music comments any time.
123
Tunes Game |
Here are
the rules for 123 TUNES. You send me thirty three tunes for the first turn, and
fifteen two tunes in each of the last six turns for a total of 123. If you
missed the first turn, you can still catch up by sending 48 tunes next issue,
and guess on submitters to this issue. I am also submitting my tunes. After
we're done, I'd like to exchange CD's/Tapes for as many of the tunes players as
possible, but this is not required. I'll be sending the winner both my LAST 123
tune list and my NEW 123 tune list. The winner is determined by having you
guess each issue who submitted what list (I will tell you who the submitters
are). For each list you get right, you get a point, you also can win bonus
points from me for really cool tune selections.
WHAT I
NEED: Quite a number of you SAID you would join but haven't yet, so we'll get
started and put the pressure on you. This part is still a MESS and I'm getting
this issue out and then will catch up next time. I think I'm going to simplify
the rules to get it back on track.
Mike Barno (Thu, 27 May 2008 09:57:16 -0500)
Jim, I'm
glad you liked the new Britney Spears CD. Almost all of the guitar work you
enjoyed is performed by an Apple Macintosh, except for bits which were
broomstick-on-a-washdrum. I didn't know you had live Jonas Brothers in your
background. What other cool new bands have you heard in person? I guess the
closest I come are The New Kids on the Block during this latest reunion tour.
Mike
Barno |
((The
Jonas Brothers concert was amazing, to be certain, but I am even more excited
about this High School Musical show coming through town in September. Can you imagine seeing the New Mickey Mouse
Club back in the day when Britney and Christina were on it together? That’s what this feel slike to me. Without question, the entire cast is destined
to have long, successful careers, and I will be able to say that I “saw them
when.”))
Rick Desper (Sunday, July 20, 2008 11:03:53 PM)
Are you
going to be doing your annual football picks?
Here are mine, even though it is still very early. ((Rick then included his list of the NFL
teams, what order they would finish, and his propsed playoff results.))
Rick,
rick_desper of yahoo.com |
((To be
honest, I am not really following professional sports anymore. I watched some of the Olympics, but aside
from table tennis and badminton I found I had no interest in those either. Every time I sit down to watch a sporting
event, I either fall asleep (golf) or find myself switching to QVC to see if
they’re having one of those cookware sales.))
Drew James (Sat, 22 August 2008 08:59:28 -0400)
Jim,
So glad
that you are back and TAP is still going strong! ((remainder of letter deleted)).
Drew,
kjames01 of twcny.rr.com |
((Hey,
sorry about not publishing the rest of your letter. But as I explained to Rick, sports are just
not my thing anymore. I can’t
rationalize taking up space with them, even at the higher sub rates.))

I am
continuing to note cut or failed support orders with a small "s"
instead of a capital "S". This will make it easier on the E-Mailed
version of the szine to see what happened, since the italics don't show there.
The italics DO show on the web page just fine.
Standby
lists:
Mike
Barno, Dick Martin, Brad Wilson, Jack McHugh, Glenn Petroski, Steve Emmert,
Mark Kinney, Vince Lutterbie, Eric Brosius, Paul Rauterberg, Bob Osuch, Doug
Kent, Sean O'Donnell, Vern Parker, Heath Gardner, Paul Kenny, and Jeff
O'Donnell stand by for regular Diplomacy.
Let me
know if you want on or off these lists, especially OFF. Standbies get the szine
for free and receive my personal thanks.
GAME
OPENING INFORMATION |
All the game openings in
the previous issue have been rescinded.
I want to get this szine going strong, so I’m going to offer two new
openings. First, a 7X7 No-Press Gunboat
Tournament. These are very popular and
fun to play in, and without all that annoying press. I’ll be naming all seven games after the
X-Files seasons. So game one will be
X-Files Season One, game two will be X-Files Season Two, and so on. You get the idea.
For those of you with
less time, I am offering two individual games of No-Press Gunboat. I’ll call one Mulder and the other
Scully. Let me know if you’d like to
sign up for any of these, and remember (as I explained on the first page) to
send the email three times!
Next issue I may offer
an opening of this new game The Settlers of New Canaan, Connecticut. I haven’t got the rules for PBM worked out
completely yet. The variant rules which
include the Red Coach Grill, the Mystic Seaport, and the Baskin Robbins pieces
would most likely be used. I’m also
designing a special “trip to Hartford” variant for the game, but that will take
a while.

Game Notes:
1) There
are no current proposals.
2) Vern
Parker has NMRed, so I'm calling Doug Kent as a standby. I don’t think Doug
playing both England and Russia will be a problem for any of you. But if it is, let me know and we can declare
this game a concession to Germany.
